Dell Studio XPS 16

Tuesday, February 24, 2009

Do you know what I hate about early January? There's CES, there's MacWorld(well, at least it was, because its future is a bit uncertain), both with a bunch of interesting laptops and accessories to be released, but you only get some technical specs, the looks, and... sometimes you get info about pricing and availability, sometimes you don't. Now, it's the perfect time to check some of those hot products and the user reviews they got. Today's target is the dell Studio XPS 16, released in early January, at CES.

What I find strange is the fact that the Studio XPS 16 and XPS 13 are quite different, but both are described by dell as "Blending power with elegance, (..) designed to deliver the ultimate multimedia laptop experience." Anyway, I am not here to judge dell's content writers, because there's something even more interesting - user feedback!

Before we get to that part, let's take a look at the basic system setup, shall we?

- Intel® Core™ 2 Duo P8600 (3MB cache/2.4GHz/1066Mhz FSB)
- Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium Edition SP1, 64-bit
- Edge-to-Edge HD Widescreen 16.0 inch WLED LCD (1366x768) W/2.0 MP
- 8X DVD+/- RW(DVD/CD read/write) Slot Load Drive DVD+/-RW or Bluray Drive
- 4GB Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1067MHz (2 Dimms)
- 320GB 7200 RPM SATA Hard Drive
- ATI Mobility RADEON® HD 3670 - 512MB
- High Definition Audio 2.0
- Intel® 5100 WLAN Wireless-N (1x2) Half Mini Card
- 6-cell Battery

Currently, the average customer rating is 4.3 out of 5 on the official product page, with most frequently mentioned problem being overheating, but that's true with most laptops, so... let's look on the bright side, where I found dell Studio XPS 16 users praising dell's choice to use DDR3 memory, and the excellent GPU, allowing them to even play Fallout 3 or Call of Duty 4! Just two more "weak points" are the lack of some NVIDIA graphics options(fanboys, you know...) and the fact that fingerprints love this laptop's surface...

This is for today, but if you're into dell, be sure to check back the day after tomorrow for the dell Studio XPS 13!
