HP Mini Mi Linux-Based Netbook Launched

Hewlett-Packard launched today the HP Mini Mi series, a Linux-based version of the Mini 1000 netbook.

Mi stands for Mobile internet. It’s a user-friendly interface built on Linux operating system. With Mi users get open source software, including a web browser, e-mail client, instant messaging application, OpenOffice for word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations, and multimedia software. However, the traditional Linux command line interface is disabled on this edition.


Regarding hardware, the 2.25-pound HP Mini Mi features a 8.9-inch (1024 x 600) or 10.1-inch (1024 x 576) display, a nearly full sized keyboard, the Intel Atom N270 processor at 1.6GHz, and up to 2GB of DDR2 RAM. Data storage choices include an 8GB or 16GB solid state drive, or a 60GB hard drive. In addition, models equipped with a solid-state drive feature a HP Mini Mobile Drive Bay that connects a separately sold HP Mini Mobile Drive (up to 8GB of extra storage). The Mini Mi sports a built-in web camera and comes with a 3-cell battery.


There are also stereo speakers, a Wireless-G Card, optional Bluetooth, Ethernet LAN, two USB ports, SD/MMC media card reader, and an expansion port that connects the device to an optional docking device or expansion product.


The HP Mini Mi starts at $329.
