Computer Data Protection with Self Destruct Capability

Sunday, November 23, 2008

We want to tell you about a new security service provided by Absolute Software, which seems to be the perfect computer data protection system we’ve ever heard of.

The company is a leader in Computer Theft Recovery, Data Protection and Secure Asset Tracking solutions provided to individuals and organizations that need to manage, protect and recover their data at any time, especially in cases when laptops are lost or stolen.

It is not a free service but not an expensive one either, compared to the number of solutions it provides. You would have to spend only £60 per laptop over its life in order to get the following: a security policy adhered by every staff member, authorization for the right staff members, the possibility to know exactly how many devices are used by the organization, accountability needed to retrieve devices from those employees leaving the organization, and, the most important, tracking, which enables tracking and recovering lost or stolen computers, with the option to self-destruct sensitive data stored on them.

The service is called ComputraceOne and is a unique software-based computer data protection solution loaded on the hard drive and in the BIOS. If the one who stole it format or replace the hard drive, the smart ComputraceOne Agent from the BIOS starts to rebuild the application files needed for controlling the hardware from the Monitoring Centre server. It is practically impossible to remove this remote control even if you delete the service from the laptop, because the ComputraceOne Agent can be removed only by the authorized user with the special password.

It is even very difficult to detect, as the company explains, and runs as a non-descript service, not being displayed as an application.

"For less than £60 per laptop over its life, ComputraceOne has provided not only value for money, but it has ensured that our data has not gotten into the wrong hands. In the last three months alone, we have been able to deactivate and remove all data from three decommissioned laptops as well as recover a stolen laptop,” said Richard Dawson, IT Services Manager at the Bracknell Forest Council.
