Sony appears ready to release a low-cost ultraportable laptop based on the VIA OpenBook design, PC World reports.

A prototype of the Sony’s mini-notebook was shown by contract manufacturer Quanta Computer at WiMax Expo in Taipei.

“A check of the laptop’s properties confirmed the laptop is based on a 1.6GHz C7-M processor from Via and listed Sony as the manufacturer,” the report says.

VIA’s OpenBook reference design features a 8.9-inch display, the VIA C7-M ULV processor, and the VX800 digital media IGP chipset. The OpenBook weighs around 2.2 pounds (1kg) and runs Windows Vista, XP, or Linux operating system.

The Sony notebook will begin shipping during the third quarter, according to Quanta.
