The world’s highest capacity Solid State Drive was announced yesterday by Samsung Electronics, as the 256GB SSD model, which is also the world’s fastest 2.5-inch multi-level cell based SSD drive type with S-ATA II interface.
And to complete the description, Samsung’s 256GB SSD is even the world’s thinnest drive with such a capacity for use in portable computers.
Its read speed is of 200MB per second while the writing speed reaches 160MB/s, highest rates for a 9.5 mm thick Solid State Drive measuring 100.3 x 69.85 mm.
"With development of the 256GB SSD, the notebook PC is on the brink of a second stage of evolution. This change is comparable to the evolution from the Sony Walkman to NAND memory-based MP3 players, representing an initial step in the shift to thinner, smaller SSD-based notebooks with significantly improved performance and more than ample storage," declared Jim Elliott, vice president, memory marketing, Samsung Semiconductor, Inc.
Samsung MLC 256GB SSD model features 1 billion hours Mean Time Between Failures and 0.9 watts power consumption.
To offer a high level of data protection, Samsung MLC 256GB SSD comes with a sophisticated data encryption process that forbids unauthorized access even when the SSD is out of the computer.
The highest capacity SSD drive’s mass production is scheduled for this year’s end and until then, samples will be available in September.
